Cellulite is the common name for the dimpling on the skin that usually appears on the thighs, legs, buttocks, stomach and arms. While it doesn’t occur often in men, it will affect 90 percent of females and usually sometime after the age of 28. Despite what many people think, cellulite is related to being overweight with it occurring in women of all shapes and sizes – including thin women.
The main reason why cellulite typically occurs in females is due hormonal factors. Puberty, menopause, pregnancy, mensuration and birth control can all affect the levels of hormones in the body. These hormones regulate blood, flow, fat, connective tissues and the lymphatic system which all play a part in developing cellulite.
Cellulite develops at the subcutaneous level of fat. Here, beneath the skin, thick bands of connective tissue begin to pull down on the skin layer above. This creates the dimples and dents on the outer surface of the skin.
There is a vast selection of treatments to get rid of cellulite. Most aren’t permanent solutions as they only treat the appearance of the condition. Here are some of the better treatments available:
Endermologie – uses a special machine to massage the fat tissues and skin. This is an extremely popular anti-cellulite technique that is found all around the country. Once you have achieved the results you want, you will need to continue maintenance sessions.
Ultrasound – has been approved by the FDA as an anti-cellulite treatment and is marketed under the name of Med Sculpt. Using Endermologie and Ultrasound together has shown promising results.
RejuvSkin – is a cosmetic surgery for cellulite option. It involves a surgeon cutting the connective tissues and transplanting fat to fill in the dimples. This is a very effective option but is only available in certain parts of the country. It also has the well known risks that are associated with invasive surgery.
