Permanent Makeup: Is It For You?

On one hand, it sounds pretty appealing: look great 24 hours a day, don’t drop $100 every time you set foot in a Sephora, and never spend an hour getting ready to go out with your friends. On the other hand, it also sounds weird, possibly painful and a little scary: getting makeup tattooed onto your face? Yikes.

There’s no doubt that permanent makeup is a trend, and it’s growing in popularity. Maybe you’ve even thought about getting it. The one thing you don’t want to do, though, is get permanent makeup on impulse. That’s just a recipe for big regrets.

With that in mind, here are a few things to consider if you’re thinking about permanent makeup:

What are your reasons for wanting to get permanent cosmetics? Women get permanent makeup for many reasons — for example, maybe they’re busy and hate taking the time out of the day to put on makeup, or maybe they’re allergic to makeup but like the made up look, or maybe they’re athletes and want makeup that won’t sweat off during, say, a tennis match. All of those are good reasons for getting permanent makeup. On the other hand, if you expect permanent makeup to change your looks dramatically, you might be disappointed. For the most part, you’ll look like you — with makeup.

Are you the type who likes to change your look frequently — one week, you’re earth girl and the next week, you’re glam? If so, you might reconsider the idea of committing to permanent makeup. While it’s true you can add to your permanent makeup by, say, putting a darker lipstick over your permanent lipstick, you can’t subtract. So, what happens if you see a model in a magazine with the barely-there-makeup look, and you suddenly decide you want that? Permanent makeup is pretty permanent.

If you hate it, removal is quite expensive and might not work. While it is possible to remove permanent makeup with a certain type of laser, in some cases, people who have done it have reported costs of $3,000 or more. That would buy quite a few pairs of new shoes or a really nice beachy girlfriend getaway (with lots of margaritas.) If you think you might have a change of heart later, it might be a good idea to opt out of getting permanent makeup.

If you love your results, permanent makeup can be a confidence booster and make you feel more carefree. Of course, not everyone loves her results, but those who do report increased confidence and freedom from worrying about things like smudged eyeliner. Will it be worth it? That’s something only you can decide.
