Possible Liposuction Dangers

Contrary to what many people think, the purpose of liposuction is not to lose weight but to reshape the figure by removing the fat that will resist any diet or workout.

All in all liposuction is a very safe operation, but this does not mean that neither the surgeon nor the patient should forget that it is still a surgical operation. As a technique, liposuction has undergone dramatic improvements over the years. More recently, an ultrasound technique was introduced (also called vaser), thus making liposuction recovery even safer and faster, and with less damage to tissues and blood vessels. Vaser liposuction breaks fat cells, making fat more liquid and more easily removable.

This article is about the risks of such operation. The purpose is by no means to cast liposuction in a bad light, but just to warn against a too laid back attitude towards it. The mother of all risks is when the surgeon doctor is not expert and professional enough. Needless to say, if you decided to have liposuction, make sure you have enough money for it. Always go to clinics that offer a reliable and documented history, even if this means spending more.

Among the possible risks:

  • surgery tools not sterilized
  • the preliminary tests and the medical history of the patient were not thorough and did not reveal a particular condition that would have made the subject unfit for the operation. The necessary preliminary tests are: blood and urine exams, ECG, and chest x-ray
  • too much anesthetic is used. It is very important to have the chance to meet the anesthetist before the operation. Also be wary of clinics where the anesthesia is administered by the same doctor, without using a specialist.
  • too much fat is removed. The maximum (average) quantity of fat that can be remove through liposuction is three liters. A higher quantity may have serious consequences on the body.
